Program Description

Explore the fascinating history of the battle for Missouri, a border state that became the third most-fought-over state in the Civil War. Experience Wilson's Creek Battlefield and Sweeney's Museum, a major Civil War museum. Visit a civil war cemetery where Union and Confederate soldiers lie side by side, discuss Fort Scott and the Mine Creek battle and Pea Ridge, where a battle in March, 1861 insured that Missouri would stay in the Union. Meet with living history participants to learn how the war affected family, politics, religion, fashion, and the major but often overlooked role that women played in the war effort. Experience a live firing of vintage cannons and learn how the fate of St. Louis was determined hundreds of miles away!
